werewolf 101 in anita blake » Lycanthropy is passed through exposure to a shifter's bodily fluids, whether it's a bite, a scratch or something similar. There's an inoculation still in the experimental phases, but even that is risky. Jason's alpha was infected by accident through a bad batch of lycanthropy vaccine. It's not 100% certain that every instance will result in the infection spreading, but it's more likely than not. Most shifters are the result of an attack by a were who lost control or never had any to begin with. » There's many flavors of shifters in Jason's world and many that reside in his home city of St Louis. Werewolves make up the majority and seem the most common, but there are several breeds of cats (leopards, tigers, lions) as well as wererats, werehyenas, even swanmanes. There are also shifters outside of the typical lycanthrope, ones that use magic to change shape or ones that were born with the ability. Most infected lycanthropes can't get pregnant because of the forced need to change once a month - it's violent and painful and the pregnancy never lasts for more than a few months. » Most shifters have two forms - man and beast. For wolves, their beast form resembles an actual wolf, just much larger, compared in size to a pony. Some powerful shifters are able to have a third form, one that is halfway between, manifesting claws and teeth at will without changing completely, appearing to be a hybrid with features of both shapes. This takes an immense amount of control and power; Jason is unable to do it. » Werewolves have the enhanced senses of the wolf - strength, speed, agility, supernatural ability. They rely heavily on their senses of scent and sound and even their eyesight is better equipped than a human's - especially in darkness. While these enhancements are often more defined and distinct in wolf form, they also carry over to human form to a lesser extent. Werewolves can lift pretty much anything with little effort and are immensely strong. They move with a preternatural grace and have even been known to be able to scent things like emotions and moods. Their instincts are especially tuned into fear and pain, being a predator species. » In the Anita Blake canon, wolves have many of their own terms and rituals only known among their kind and their packs. They are known as the Lukoi. Their alpha is called Ulfric and his mate is called Lupa. Jason's particular pack calls themselves the Thronnos Rokke Clan and is the larges group of shifters in St Louis, rumored to have over 600 wolves within its structure. Once a month, they gather in the Lupanar, their pack's place of power and ritual, to shift on the full moon and hunt together. » Pack standing is established by being dominant over other wolves. Dominance is established by challenging and either fighting or backing down other pack members. Dominance fights are rarely to the death and sometimes are psychological battles. If the werewolf being challenged does not wish to fight, they simply acknowledge the challenger's dominance and the confrontation is over. The victor rises in rank and assumes the spot vacated by the defeated. » Werewolves' supernatural healing ability often comes in handy for them because despite many of them being "out", being a shifter means life is often more dangerous. They can heal most wounds quickly and things that would kill a human are not quite so mortal to a shifter. However, silver burns them and they heal almost humanly slow from it, as well as from wounds inflicted by other shifters or burns. Close contact with others of their kind seems to speed healing, however, and all shifters are very tactical, frequently initiating contact in subtle ways to give comfort, reassurance, or protection.
personal history Jason's from a picturesque little town outside of Asheville, NC where his mother and father and two sisters still reside. He never fit in well with his family and had an especially difficult relationship with his father, which led to him getting as far away for college as he could manage. He ended up at a college in St Louis on a business degree that his parents were paying for, even though his interests lay more in dance and theater. It was there he met Raina, Lupa of the Thronnos Rokke Clan and immediately became infatuated. Amidst both rebellion against the expectations his parents placed on him and his own fascination with danger and longing for freedom, Jason agreed to be brought into the pack. Raina was the one who brought him over, but the intimate encounter wasn't what he'd anticipated and when she shifted in the middle of it, he was injured so badly and so traumatically that if the lycanthropy hadn't taken, he would have been dead. She was his sponsor into the pack, however, the one who was in charge of teaching him control, so until he found an alternative, he was under her command. The alternative provided itself in the form of St. Louis's Master of the City, Jean-Claude. The vampire's animal to call was wolf, meaning he had an intimate bond and kinship with the animal, including the were cousins. Recently come into power in the city, he makes an alliance with the alpha of Jason's pack and in trade, the alpha agrees to loan the vampire court several wolves for protection and food. Jason volunteers himself and there's little debate over it as he ranks low on the pack structure, being young and not very dominant. And as it got him away from Raina, he didn't mind becoming the vampire's pet. Most of the time we see Jason in canon, it's in continuing his role as Jean-Claude's pet, his pomme de sang or 'apple of blood' as the vampires term it. Its a cherished role among the vampires, offering position and protection for him among them. he drops out of college and ends up being a dancer at one of Jean-Claude's strip clubs, a position he seems very content with. Later, he gets an additional position in the growing web of metaphysical connections that make up the supernatural community of St. Louis. A close friend (occasionally with benefits) of Anita Blake - necromancer, vampire executioner and Jean-Claude's human servant - he's with her when an ancient vampire messes with her magic and when they get things sorted out once more, he finds himself linked to her, as her personal wolf to call. Despite the fact that she's not a vampire, her necromancy and position as a human servant sets her apart from normal humans in ways they are still discovering. Anita's leopard to call and lover, Nathaniel, is Jason's best friend.
appearance Jason stands about 5'3, rather short for a male, and it puts him exactly at the same height as Anita. He's mostly slim and lithe, having a dancer's body and the easy grace that accompanies it, although it's noted he has fairly broad shoulders. As he strips for a living, he's fit and muscled and completely comfortable with his appearance. He has blond hair that he keeps cut rather short and blue eyes that are described as the color of the summer sky. When he smiles, he has dimples. When he shifts to a wolf, his coloring is grey, with spring-green eyes. He's larger than a normal wolf, estimated as roughly the size of a pony, but more lean muscle.
